The hive of activity at Ferrymead Central, on the doorstep of Christchurch’s affluent hill and seaside suburbs, has even surprised developer Tim Carter of the Carter Group.
The 8700m2 site includes 110 car parks, which Carter thought could be a few too many when the site was completed in early 2008.
“We knew it would trade well and that there was a need for this type of development in this part of Christchurch, but we’re astounded at how quickly it has taken off. The mix of retail and hospitality seems to work very well at Ferrymead Central, ensuring there’s always something happening day and night,” Carter said.
One of two remaining tenancies (248m2) is currently under negotiation with a further 33.8m2 still available. Other tenants are: Speights Ale House, Winnie Bagoes, Tandoori Palace, Henrys, Pets N Vets, Flooring Xtra, and Café Del Mar.
Carter Group bought the Waterman Pl site in 2004, complete with resource consents already in place for a mixed use hospitality/retail. The total site includes another 4500m2 of bare land at the rear of the development, which Carter will look to utilise in the next couple of years.
In establishing Ferrymead Central, Carter said they deliberately earmarked tenants who would suit the higher socio-demographic surrounding areas.
“I think the high quality tenants and the mix between hospitality and retail has worked really well for us and the locals.”
