“Kaipara Hills” is located 70 km north west of the Auckland CBD and is 141.75ha bareland block currently used for pastoral grazing. However, its altitude and contour offers an excellent opportunity to be planted into commercial forestry.
The property was previously in commercial forestry, but was ruled to be deforested prior to 2008, therefore is classified as post 89 land. “Kaipara Hills” classification as post 89 land, ensures a significant carbon earning opportunity for the successful purchaser.
The outlook for greater carbon earnings is positive. We have seen the price of carbon steadily increase since 2014, with the review of the ETS resulting in the increase in the fixed price option to $35. Since the removal of the fixed price option we have seen the value of carbon skyrocket.
With the Northland and Auckland regions being rich in domestic processing and efficient export ports located in Auckland and Whangarei, this is a superb opportunity to establish a forest in a region that is set up to support commercial forestry.
As New Zealand transitions to a low-emissions economy, the important role that forests and trees play is growing. The Government has increased its focus on forestry through the One Billion Trees Program. Part of this program includes funding via Government Grants including Direct Landowner Grants to provide simples and accessible direct grants to landowners.
There is an additional possible benefit for the successful purchaser of being eligible for transferable titles.
