Lisa Curtin is a Senior Project Manager in our Project Leaders team in Hamilton. With a background in architecture, she works closely with design teams and main contractors to ensure projects are delivered to a high standard and within budget. Curtin won the Rider Levett Bucknall Young Achiever of the Year Award at the Property Council New Zealand Central Property People Awards 2023.

What is your academic and professional background?

I spent 5 years studying Architecture at the University of Auckland, completing a Bachelor of Architectural Studies and a Master of Architecture (Honours). After finishing university, I took a job at Edwards White Architects in Hamilton, working on both residential and commercial new builds and refurbishments.

My interest in Project Management was piqued during my last couple of years at university. I felt like it would better align with my organisational strengths. After working in architecture for two and a half years I took a role at Greenstone Group/Colliers Project Leaders as a Project Manager and have not looked back.

What’s the most fulfilling aspect of your role?

I get to work with so many different clients, consultants, and contractors across the projects I am involved with. I really enjoy developing these working relationships and understanding what motivates each person, especially our clients, to get the best results for the project.

What is a project that you are particularly proud of?

The new Cambridge Community Police hub which we completed for Tainui Group Holdings and New Zealand Police in August 2022. This building creates a statement in the community and challenges the notion of what a police station should be. It has a warm, welcoming feel and balances a detailed cultural narrative with the highly functional and robust requirements of a police hub.

What is the most challenging part of your role?

Whilst not specific to the role, learning to manage stress and switch off at the end of the day was something I needed to work on when transitioning from Architecture to Project Management. It’s a work in progress but I have been able to develop a toolbox of techniques which I can draw on when I need to.

What’s one piece of professional development advice that you would recommend to other people?

Integrity will take you a long way in the industry. You may not always get everything 100 per cent right but if you bring this quality to each new task or project you tackle you will earn the respect of your clients and peers.
