Find the latest information, market research and insights for dairy farmers, connect with rural property experts from around New Zealand, or browse featured dairy farms for sale.
We understand that dairy farming is not just a job, it’s a way of life, and the decision to sell your property is a big one.
With such a complex asset, it’s crucial that you take the time to get your farm and business sorted to ensure it’s presented in the best light. A well-presented farm is very attractive to the market, so spending some time on the small details will make a big difference and yield results.
While you don’t need to spend a lot of money to prepare your farm, you do need to ensure that you’ve got the basics covered.
A farm that looks like it needs a lot of work may put buyers off and purchasers who are looking for a “do-up” will want this reflected in the price. Ensuring that your property is presented at its best will help to maximise the value.
Dairy farming is a seasonal business, so it's worth thinking about when the best time to sell is, both practically and aesthetically. We suggest not only considering when your farm will look its best, but what market conditions will be most favourable, and when you will be able to dedicate some time to the process.
Deciding when to sell will also determine your lead time and how much you will be able to do in preparation. It’s a good idea to get someone with fresh eyes – your Colliers agent will be able to help with this - to objectively review your property and pick up things you may miss.
Remember that you only get once chance to make a first impression, so make it count!
We’ve put together a checklist to help you prepare your dairy farm for market.

Ruth commenced her career in rural real estate in August 2009 before establishing the first Colliers Rural and Agribusiness franchise in New Zealand with Shane O’Brien in September 2014. Her experience and acumen led to a role operating at a national level, spearheading growth in Colliers’ Rural business between 2018 and 2021.
Now based in the Southern-Lakes district, Ruth is Managing Director of the Otago and Southland Rural business, of which she was one of the co-founders in January 2019.

She then joined the progressive new dairy company, Synlait, as Business Development Manager, focusing on growing their farming assets via key acquisitions around the Canterbury region.
