Annual long lunch raises a record $200k for local and national charities
A remote high country station with spectacular views, Central Otago wines, a private chef and the generosity of Colliers International’s top private clients once again proved a winning combination for three local charities at Colliers’ annual long lunch charity fundraiser this month.
This year’s Colliers Latitude 45 South Lunch and charity auction raised a record $200,000 for the event’s chosen charities, namely Wakatipu High School Foundation, Cure Kids and the Otago Hospice. This takes the total raised since the event’s inception in 2011 to in excess of $1,000,000.
The 2018 event, held amid the restored historic farm buildings of Ben Nevis Station, followed the same tried and true format as previous years, says Mark Simpson, Colliers International Queenstown Director.
“It’s a pretty simple recipe for a great day out which is always highly anticipated and enjoyed by all. We round up Colliers’ top private clients nationwide, fly them to Queenstown, helicopter them to a mystery wilderness destination and put on a long lunch showcasing the best of our region’s wine and food.
"The day is then topped off with a charity auction which enables us to provide meaningful support to very worthy local and national causes.”
After landing at Ben Nevis Station in stunning weather, the group enjoyed outdoor activities including clay bird shooting before sitting down to a long lunch prepared by Chef Brendan Catering.
After lunch, auctioneer Brendan Quill expertly convinced attendees to open their wallets for the three charities, with this year’s $200,000 total a record since the event began.
The Latitude 45 South Lunch was established by Colliers Queenstown as a way of thanking the company’s top private clients while at the same time raising serious cash for local and national charities, Simpson says.
“Ben Nevis is a perfect example of the stunning, rugged landscapes to be found in the high country near Queenstown," he says.
"We’re pretty fortunate to be able to showcase some of these lesser-known areas of natural beauty around Lake Wakatipu to our top clients nationwide."
The generosity of the event’s attendees has a real impact on the chosen charities every year.
Mark Taylor, Chairman of the Wakatipu High School Foundation, says he is again incredibly inspired and humbled by Colliers International Queenstown's support.
"Colliers has donated over $360,000 to the foundation since its inception in 2013, which has meant an unparalleled investment in the education of our students.
"The foundation continues to grow each year and fund programmes ranging from arts, sport, scholarship, staff development and the vital Awhi (financial hardship) Fund.
"With this further donation, Colliers will continue to make an enormous impact on the quality of education at Wakatipu High School and our community."
Tim Edmonds, Cure Kids Research Director says the organisation’s ability to fund vital research to improve and save the lives of children in New Zealand and worldwide is greatly assisted by the funds raised by Colliers’ Latitude 45 South Lunch.
“We are extremely grateful for Colliers’ support, which enables us to continue to work with leading researchers across the country to identify new opportunities for providing funding into life-saving child health research.
"Quite simply, the more that is raised through Colliers’ Queenstown long lunch event, the more Cure Kids can invest in research, and we are extremely grateful for their support.”
Ginny Green, CEO of Hospice Otago says the Otago Community Hospice, which cares for patients with a terminal illness throughout Otago while also supporting their families and their care providers, relies on the help of individual and corporate donors in the Otago community.
“We are truly thankful for the fundraising efforts of the Colliers team and their clients. Their generosity directly assists our patients throughout Otago, whom we support and empower to live well and die well.”
