Prime St Martins Church site for sale

'As is, where is' investment opportunity

The Anglican Diocese of Christchurch is selling St Anne’s Church and vicarage, on the corner of Wilsons and Centaurus Roads in St Martins.

St Anne’s, part of the Opawa/St Martins Parish, is being sold ‘as is where is’ to help to raise money for repair and restoration work to be done on the other neighbouring Anglican church in the parish, St Mark’s in Opawa.

The two churches amalgamated in 2007 as part of a Diocesan rationalisation programme.

Rev’d Canon Ben Truman, Vicar of the Parish of Opawa/St Martins, said that the parishioners are sad but philosophical about relinquishing the site.

“It’s a site that has been used for worship for almost 100 years, Services there began in the 1920s and the church there was built in the late 1940s. So, of course, we are sad. But we are very excited to begin work on repairing and renovating St Mark’s.

“As part of that renovation, plans are underway to include a small chapel, which we will call the Chapel of St Anne’s, in recognition of our parish history and to keep a new expression of St Anne’s alive.

“We are also looking forward to welcoming the students of St Mark’s School back into their home church again. It’s a joyous journey moving forward,” Rev’d Truman says.

Investment broker Courtney Doig, of Colliers International in Christchurch, said St Anne’s church, while damaged, is currently safe to occupy and services are still being held there.

“These lovely buildings are safe to occupy and would suit a variety of uses. Any buyer would have the ability to lease to provide holding income while planning their repair or redevelopment.

“St Martins is a thriving suburb and this property is very close to the popular New World complex and Beckenham shops.”

Zoned residential suburban, the prime corner freehold site represents a significant land holding of 1,968sq m.

It comprises the church at 3 Wilsons Rd covering 1,057sq m and the 911sq m vicarage at 9 Wilsons Rd.

The buildings are for sale by deadline private treaty closing at 4pm on Thursday 2 May, unless sold prior.
